Poem Six Degrees of Suffering (Part 5 of 6) by Lauren Zuniga

FIVE.
Emma just bought a new cell-phone.
Emma means All Containing.
Emma is a cubicle. She is student loan
payments and take out boxes. She stands
in the kitchen to eat. Her mother died on
a Sunday. She is sad on Sunday. Goes shopping
after church. Wonders if she will spend her
whole life feeling small and useless. Today
she stops suddenly in front of the TV. Notices
a picture of a girl, with a baby slung across
her hip. It looked like a dress her mother gave
her one Easter. Pansies, she remembers.
